What Sort of Websites?

Once upon a time, the internet largely displayed one type of site - static portfolio sites. These days there is a choice: Static and Dynamic.

Static sites are, as the name suggests, sites in which nothing much changes. Once the site is up and running the client has to pay a fee each time a change is needed. This can be expensive for client if they want to regularly change content but is an acceptable option if you do not change the site content often.

Dynamic sites change. The client can now update the site content themselves, this cuts down the expense for the client and additionally allows the web site designer to design and develop rather than simply update. There is, of course, some slight learning to be done by the client on how to manage the back end of the site. Don't worry, its only slight.

Wish Design now produces dynamic sites as standard using a framework called a Content Management System (CMS) and charges the same cost that many other companies charge for a static brochure site. However if you would like a static site I will of course be happy to accommodate.

Content Management Systems

Wish Design likes and encourages Content Management Systems. They give you the client, control over the text and image content of your site, making the site more accurate, immediate and useful. They control and organise your data, they can save you money.

A content management system is software that keeps track of every piece of content on your Web site, much like your local public library keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of. A major advantage of using a CMS is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage. Since the CMS manages all your content, you don't have to.

Wish Design specialises in the use of Joomla as a CMS. Joomla allows the designer to design a site which the client can easily update themselves.

Web Site Hosting

Once you have a web site you need some way of allowing the computers in the rest of the world to communicate with your web site.

This is done by placing your web site on a computer permanently connected to the internet. This is called hosting.
